This week, I’ve been reflecting on the concept of power and what it looks like today. For much of my life, I believed that real power had to be bold and attention-commanding, the kind that fills a room the moment you walk in. But over time, and especially as I step into new seasons of life, becoming a grandmother and looking towards milestone birthdays, I’ve come to see another kind of power—one that comes quietly, when you’re comfortable in your own skin and open to others.
Naturally, this has me thinking about “power dressing.” For so long, it meant structured suits and stiff fabrics, a way of armouring up to fit a specific mould. But today, I see it differently. Power can be fluid, feminine, and elevated.
It’s about choosing what works for you, what gives you strength, and what allows you to show up fully. Because when you feel at ease in what you’re wearing, your presence shifts—and that’s when power shows itself.
Redefining the Power Piece
Don't get me wrong, I’ll always have space in my wardrobe for a strong jacket. But the piece I lean on most often today isn’t a jacket at all—it’s the wide-leg pant. They manage to balance polish with comfort, elongating the body while I move through the day. To me, this is the new power piece: one that doesn’t confine but still commands, and is proof that confidence doesn’t need to be stiff to stand tall, but for you, it might be something else that grounds you, and that's okay, too.
Some of my go-tos are classic trousers like the Emotional Essence styles from Dorothee Schumacher, or a great wide-leg like the Polary from Marie Saint Pierre. If you're looking for something a little more fun, try a novelty pair from Cambio, which specializes in bottoms.
The Strength in Softness
There’s something quietly commanding about the new texture, which we're seeing across the runways this season. Brushed Cashmere has a way of being versatile—elegant enough for work, relaxed enough for home, and always comfortable for everything in between. What I love most is the feeling it gives me, like being wrapped in something protective but still refined. On days when I need strength, this is what I reach for. Power doesn’t always come from a sharp edge; sometimes it’s in knowing you can carry yourself with both polish and ease.

Subtle Science of Colour
Colour is a quiet superpower that I've leaned on for decades. I even owned a Colours franchise in the 1980s, and I still lean on the principles today. I've always found it subtly commands attention, differentiating you from the neutrals in the room. When worn thoughtfully, the right shades allow you to truly glow and act like a frame, enhancing your natural beauty rather than overpowering it.
While you may not be prepared to learn the ins and outs of what colours to wear and how to wear them, our stylists are professionally trained in colour theory, and while I admit to bias, they each have a keen eye for what works best and know how to push the envelope just a little to find the right look, so I suggest you lean on them for support too.

Power isn’t loud. It’s present. It’s how you show up for yourself, in the choices you make and the way you carry them. And sometimes, it begins with something as simple as what you decide to put on in the morning.
