New Season, No Rules.

As we step into a new season, I’ve been thinking a lot about what fresh starts really mean. When we were buying for Spring, something stood out—there was a noticeable shift. Usually, trend research means decoding patterns, silhouettes, colours, the so-called “must-haves” of the moment. But this year? There were no rules. It wasn’t about chasing trends—it was about dressing for you.

And honestly, that hit home. Because the women I work with every day—the ones building businesses, raising families, leading with purpose—none of them got where they are by playing it safe. And neither did we at Hangar9 (40 years this September)!

Personally? I break rules all the time—and I’m better for it. I thrive in a little bit of chaos. A perfectly made bed? Not for me. A pristine desk? Rarely. But that’s the thing: everyone has their own rules to break.

So, let’s start with what I know best: fashion.

I’m not talking about the rules we’ve already outgrown—like no white after Labour Day or socks with sandals (that's right on trend at the moment anyways). I’m talking about those unspoken style “principles” we’ve absorbed over time, without ever stopping to ask why.

1. “You can’t mix patterns with prints.”

Says who? Prints and patterns are what make a wardrobe exciting. Pairing them is where style happens. Anyone can match a floral top with a solid pant—but mixing gingham with stripes, or leopard with polka dots? That’s personality. That’s confidence. That’s style.

This look is a perfect way to take your prints and patterns and make them yours. Match some colours to make it work together, and use your accessories to tie together the rest! Here's the blouse and trousers featured here.

2. “Neutrals don’t mix.”

Let’s retire this one for good. Black and navy, brown and grey, camel and charcoal—these pairings are modern, chic, and endlessly wearable. Mixing neutrals adds depth, texture, and interest to your look without ever feeling overdone.

Accessories are what finish even the simplest of outfits, make sure your style shines through! Here's the bracelet, available in both colours.

And while we’re at it, let’s stop choosing between gold and silver. Wear both. Layer both. Stack your metals, mix your finishes—your style shouldn’t be limited by some outdated rule from 1983. If it looks good to you, that’s all that matters.

3. “Clothes are for their [any] intended purpose.”

Proof that pajamas deserve a passport stamp. Here I am in Panama, wearing my robe as part of my look.  Here is a link to some similar styles.

Not in my closet. A silk pajama shirt? Makes a great dinner top. A slip dress? Perfect with a blazer and sneakers. If you love it, wear it—really wear it. The more ways you can style a piece, the more valuable (and personal) it becomes. Getting dressed should feel creative, not confined. Why save your favourite pieces for rare occasions when they could be bringing joy to your everyday? Fashion should work for your life—not the other way around.

So this Spring, I’m dressing for me—and breaking a few rules while I’m at it. If you’re feeling the same, you’re in the right place. Let’s make Sundays our reset, our style check-in, our mood board for the week ahead.

Oh, and if you're looking for somewhere to start, I've curated a few "rule-breaker" looks I'm styling this Spring here.

xoxo,
Lisa
